THE RETREAT

Mountain Contemporary - The Valley - Tabernash, Colorado

The Client requested us to create a mountain retreat for them. They did not want the traditional Colorado mountain home. They wanted a comfortable, simple home that had the right scale and size. Our inspiration was a series of contemporary cabins in Norway that they showed us.

We helped them locate an open site next to a meadow in the Valley at Winter Park, outside of Tabernash, Colorado. The site was gently sloping to the south, nearly a flat lot with wonderful views to the Ski Area and the Continental Divide. A one-story scheme was decided on to create a low-profile home that fit with the open landscape. The solution was a collection of four cabins connected by a flat roof gallery. The first cabin contains the Garage, Mudroom/ Laundry and Powder Room. The second cabin contains the Great Room with a Covered Porch. The porch siding was pulled apart to let light in and harkens to the husband’s Wyoming roots. The third cabin contains the Main Bedroom Suite, while the fourth cabin contains the additional Bedroom Suites.

These cabins are arranged to create a courtyard, which helps to contain their wandering dogs. The cabins have an asymmetrical roofline to mimic the adjacent Continental Divide peaks. They are wrapped in standing seam metal and reclaimed siding for minimal maintenance. All of this is contained in 3,900 sf. including the Garage.
